This chamber music work, composed in 1907/08, marks a turning point not only in Schönberg's output, but also for the history of modern music in general. Major-minor tonality, obligatory for centuries, is increasingly abandoned over the four movements in favourof a free atonality. This break with music-historical tradition goes hand-in-hand with a further breach of convention; in the last two movements, Schönberg includes a solo soprano singing settings of two poems by Stefan George. With the transition to atonality, Schönberg opens the way to a new musical language which was to lead to twelve-tone music a little later. Without question, his second String Quartet represents a landmark in the history of music. Bartók's Second String Quartet was composed - with several long interruptions - between 1915 and 1918, after he had spent several years almost solely devoted to collecting folk music. The melody and rhythms of the riotous middle movement “Allegro, molto capriccioso” provide impressive testimony of how his research trips had taken him as far as North Africa. The first edition of this quartet, published in Vienna in 1920, contains a conspicuous number of errors that were only partially corrected in a later revisionundertaken by Bartók. As late as the 1940s he noted changes in his personal copy of the score that have never previously appeared inprint.

These late changes by Bartók are taken into account in this definitive edition of the string quartets supervised by Bartók scholar László Somfai, with problematic passages in the sources carefully documented. It is the first-ever Urtext edition of this work. Sensible page turns and cue notes in the parts mean that this edition is ideal for exploring Bartók’s sound world in performance.

Alban Berg's String Quartet can be considered to be one of the founding works of the Second Viennese School. Already composed in 1910 and first published in 1920, it was the last composition the 25-year-old wrote under the tutelage of Arnold Schoenberg, who admired "the fullness and unconstraint of his musical language, the strength and sureness of its presentation, its careful working and significant originality". Even today the extremely complex work places the highest technical demands on the interpreters; for this reason Henle's edition contains parts that are especially good to play from, in which each musician can also follow what is going on in the other parts.

Redolent of the work of Dmitri Shostakovich in its musical language, Evgeny Kissin's String Quartet op. 3 comprises four strongly contrasting movements: on the heels of the stately "Adagio liberamente" comes an extremely lively "Allegro inquieto" that wanders between dynamic extremes and bristles with glissandi. The third movement, marked "Largo drammatico", is sustained by an insistent, heavily rhythmic dotted motive, while the final movement shifts from the introduction, marked "Pensierosamente, ma mantenendo strettamente il ritmo puntato", into a brilliant finale, "Molto allegro e sarcastico", that is suffused with elements of fugato and like all movements, informed by dodecaphonic harmonies. This demanding fifteen-minute work was composed in 2015-16 and recorded for the first time on Nimbus Records by the Kopelman Quartet.

As with its companion work op. 88 from 1882, Brahms’s second string quintet was supposed to be completed in the relaxed atmosphere of a summer in Bad Ischl, but eight years later. The work’s first technical try-out in Vienna in October 1890, which Brahms described to his friend Clara Schumann as “not displeasing”, was followed by a fine-tuning of the work in close dialogue with musical friends such as Joseph Joachim before Brahms sent score and parts to his publisher Simrock at the year's end. With its at times orchestral texture and stirring, typically Brahmsian rhythms, this cheerful work early on won the hearts of listeners and players alike, despite presenting the latter with some challenges. This new Henle Urtext edition is based on the New Brahms Complete Edition, for which editor Kathrin Kirsch has consulted all the autograph sources and first editions. With parts that have judiciously set page turns and cue-notes to facilitate performance, it offers the best foundation for approaching this jewel of Brahms's chamber music.

Brahms's First String Sextet became very popular after its publication in 1861, yet his publisher Simrock still hesitated when the composer offered him a second such work in 1865, "in the same cheerful mood". So Brahms made overtures to other publishers, but thenSimrock finally agreed to take it on. The critics were initially rather sceptical towards this Sextet op. 36, but Brahms's friends thoroughly approved of it. Clara Schumann praised its accomplished motivic work, while others enthused about its magical sound colours. This practical edition by Katrin Eich, based on the Brahms Complete Edition, now offers performers the opportunity to form their own opinion, whether in performance or by perusing our study edition.
