The “Romance sans paroles dédiée à Mlle. Lise Christiani” - thus described in the surviving autograph - was only published as op. 109 from the composer's estate in 1868. The French cellist Lise Christiani gave several concerts in Leipzig in October 1845, where she met with Mendelssohn and presumably commissioned him to write this charming work. It is the only “Song without words” that Mendelssohn wrote for two instruments, not piano solo. It was previously only available as part of a collection of works for this instrumentation (51480669). However, the “Romance sans paroles”, a favorite with cellists, is now also available as a single Henle Urtext edition.

This composition published in 1802 constitutes a completely separate concert piece from Opus 51 no. 1. Compared to the first Rondo (op. 51 no. 1), the second is considerably longer and with a markedly different expressive disposition. Here, lyrical traits predominate without any of the dramatic incursions otherwise so emblematic of Beethoven's compositions. “My idea of developing music from Richard of Gloucester's monologue 'Now is the winter of our discontent', and of generating more music from that material, was conceived during the 1960s. Ten years later it took a more concrete form, when Julian Bream suggested to me that I should write a substanial new guitar work for him. More time went by, and only having finished 'We Come to the River' could I begin to realise our plan. Then began a collaboration with the instrumentalist that went through various phases, from which I gained a more profound knowledge of the technicalities and of the sound-world of the guitar. I would even go so far as to say thatthis collaboration gave me a new concept of how to write for an instrument with a rich tradition. The guitar is a 'knowing' or 'knowledgeable' instrument, with many limitations but also many unexplored spaces and depths within these limits. It possesses a richness of sound capable of embracing everything one might find in a gigantic contemporary orchestra; but one has to start from silence in order to notice this: one has to pause, and completely exclude noise.

The dramatis personae of this piece enter through the sound of the guitar as if it were curtain. Through masks, voices and gestures,they speak to us of great passion, of tenderness, sadness and comedy: strange events in people's lives. Into this, the whispering voices of spirits are mingled. The epilogue is spoken by Oberon, pacified and reconciled, as though Nature had been subjected to Man.”

Edward Elgar's Salut d’amour is one of those pieces by the British composer that has a particularly haunting melody. Composed in 1888 for his future wife Caroline Alice Roberts, the work became an enormous success early on. There are numerous arrangements - but the only versions for which the autograph manuscripts survive are those for Violin and Piano (HN 1188), Piano solo (HN 1190) and Violoncello and Piano. Up to now there has only been an arrangement of the cello part made by the original publisher, presumably with Elgar's approval. Now, for the very first time, Henle publishes the version following Elgar's autograph manuscript, which for unknown reasons had never been released. Also included is the trusted musical text from the first edition.
