String Quartet A-flat Major Op. 105 - Study ScoreFeatures:
Although Dvorák's stay in America (1892-95) was very successful, the composer suffered a good deal from homesickness. He had begun the string quartet in A flat major in New York, but continued with it only after his return to Bohemia in December 1895. There is no trace of the influence of Indian or African-American music in this, his final chamber work; rather, the piece is striking for the amount of cantabile themes and motive, and their contrasting and artistic treatment. It seems that his relief at seeing his children and family again directly influenced the work. Dvorák himself wrote in a letter during its composition that, "Almighty God has granted us this cheerful moment, and thus we all feel unutterable happy". This Henle publication is the first Urtext edition of the quartet since 1955.

String Quartet in A Minor, Op. 29, D. 804 "Rosamunde"Features:
Series: Henle Study Scores Publisher: Henle Urtext Edition Format: Softcover Study Score Composer: Franz Schubert The quartet in A minor is one of the chamber music works with which Schubert wanted to "pave the way to the great symphony" in spring 1824. At the same time he was paving his way to a wider audience, as the "Rosamunde" quartet was the first and only string quartet that was not only publicly performed in Schubert's lifetime but also published in parts. It is fortunate for us that this was the case because the autograph of this much-loved quartet is missing today and the only source for the work is the first edition. And this is precisely where the challenge lies, as the parts exhibit some inaccuracies regarding the articulation and dynamics. They have had to be carefully resolved, something which our new Urtext edition has done in an exemplary fashion. Its name can be traced back to Schubert's incidental music to the play Rosamunde, which can be heard at the beginning of the Andante. Quite a few people might, however, be reminded of the Impromptu in B flat major op. post. 142 no. 3, in which Schubert later once again took up the beautiful melody.

String Quartet
Composer: Antonin Dvorak
Editor: Peter Jost
Composed in autumn of 1881, Opus 61 is the last of Dvorak's “middle” quartets by chronology for which Beethoven and Schubert served as the most significant models. Beethoven's influence, from thematic development to motivic treatment, is particularly noticeable in this work in C major. It is only in the finale that the typical Slavic tonal quality usually found in Dvorak's music surfaces somewhat more prominently. Due to a lack of time, the composer - contrary to his usual practice - turned to older, either discarded or hitherto unpublished themes from other works for three of the four movements. This reliable Urtext edition continues the comprehensive Henle series of significant works of chamber music by Dvorak.

After the success of his Slavonic Dances in 1878, Dvorák received a request for a string quartet in “Slavonic style”. In this piece, each of the four movements is informed by melodies and rhythms in the style of Czech folk dances and songs. Besides the first editions of the score and parts, all surviving autograph sources were consulted for this Henle Urtext edition.

String Quartet
Composer: Antonín Dvorák
Editor: Peter Jost
In autumn 1895, after returning from New York once and for all, Dvorák took up his former position as teacher at the Prague Conservatory. This clearly had an inspiring impact on him because in the space of just four weeks he composed a new string quartet in G major. Together with the Quartet in A-flat major op. 105, it forms a glorious close to his chamber music oeuvre. Echoes of Bohemian folk music are here mixed with cantabile themes, while his motivic working shows him to be a master at the height of his owers. Even today, it seems almost as if we can feel the composer’s satisfaction with this work: "I am working so easily and it is going so smoothly that I could not wish it better".

Composer: Franz Schubert
Editor: Egon Voss
Schubert's composition of a new string quartet begun in December 1820 was, alas, never to get beyond the first movement; the heavily reworked autograph breaks off at the outset of the second movement. But the fragmentary work that later came into the hands of Johannes Brahms from Schubert's estate, delighted its new owner so much after its premiere in 1867 that Brahms had the first movement published three years later as Schubert's "Posthumous Work" - thus paving the way into audiences' hearts for this little gem. Schubert's autograph manuscript features such numerous divergences in dynamics and articulation that editor Egon Voss suspects it to be one of Schubert's experiments with variations. This is why in his Urtext edition he proceeds with extreme restraint in issuing additions and changes with respect to parallel passages - thus making Schubert's diversity of ideas comprehensible for performing musicians. For all who want a peek inside Schubert's workshop, the few measures of the second movement are included as a bonus!

Composer: Bela Bartók
Editor: László Somfai
Béla Bartók's six string quartets, composed between 1908 and 1940, are 20th-century milestones of the genre. His First String Quartet is closely linked to his unhappy love for the violinist Stefi Geyer, to whom he sent the initial measures of its first movement in early 1908 with the remark: “My song of death.” When he completed all three movements of the work a year later, he had, according to his friend and colleague Zoltán Kodály, written himself “back into life,” In this First Quartet, Bartók combines late-Romantic sounds with elements of the folk music that had since 1905 been a source of increasing interest to him. This definitive edition, supervised by Bartók scholar László Somfai, is the first-ever Urtext edition of this work. It takes into account both manuscript and printed sources, as well as letters and notes by the composer in which he recorded matters such as modifications to tempo markings. The Henle edition thus offers a musical text edited to the highest scholarly standards, with fascinating information on the work's compositional history and performance practice. Sensible page turns and cue notes help to make this edition a real “must have.”

Composer: Arnold Schoenberg
Editor: Ullrich Scheideler
This chamber music work, composed in 1907/08, marks a turning point not only in Schönberg's output, but also for the history of modern music in general. Major-minor tonality, obligatory for centuries, is increasingly abandoned over the four movements in favourof a free atonality. This break with music-historical tradition goes hand-in-hand with a further breach of convention; in the last two movements, Schönberg includes a solo soprano singing settings of two poems by Stefan George. With the transition to atonality, Schönberg opens the way to a new musical language which was to lead to twelve-tone music a little later. Without question, his second String Quartet represents a landmark in the history of music. The new Henle edition is edited by Schönberg specialist Ullrich Scheideler reflecting the latest state of research. The Henle Urtext edition publishes this modern classic in a new, generously laidout music setting.

String Quartet Parts
Composer: Bela Bartók
Editor: László Somfai
Bartók's Second String Quartet was composed - with several long interruptions - between 1915 and 1918, after he had spent several years almost solely devoted to collecting folk music. The melody and rhythms of the riotous middle movement “Allegro, molto capriccioso” provide impressive testimony of how his research trips had taken him as far as North Africa. The first edition of this quartet, published in Vienna in 1920, contains a conspicuous number of errors that were only partially corrected in a later revisionundertaken by Bartók. As late as the 1940s he noted changes in his personal copy of the score that have never previously appeared inprint.
These late changes by Bartók are taken into account in this definitive edition of the string quartets supervised by Bartók scholar László Somfai, with problematic passages in the sources carefully documented. It is the first-ever Urtext edition of this work. Sensible page turns and cue notes in the parts mean that this edition is ideal for exploring Bartóks sound world in performance.

String Quartet No. 3Features:
Alban Berg's String Quartet can be considered to be one of the founding works of the Second Viennese School. Already composed in 1910 and first published in 1920, it was the last composition the 25-year-old wrote under the tutelage of Arnold Schoenberg, who admired "the fullness and unconstraint of his musical language, the strength and sureness of its presentation, its careful working and significant originality". Even today the extremely complex work places the highest technical demands on the interpreters; for this reason Henle's edition contains parts that are especially good to play from, in which each musician can also follow what is going on in the other parts.

Composer: Evgeny Kissin
Redolent of the work of Dmitri Shostakovich in its musical language, Evgeny Kissin's String Quartet op. 3 comprises four strongly contrasting movements: on the heels of the stately "Adagio liberamente" comes an extremely lively "Allegro inquieto" that wanders between dynamic extremes and bristles with glissandi. The third movement, marked "Largo drammatico", is sustained by an insistent, heavily rhythmic dotted motive, while the final movement shifts from the introduction, marked "Pensierosamente, ma mantenendo strettamente il ritmo puntato", into a brilliant finale, "Molto allegro e sarcastico", that is suffused with elements of fugato and like all movements, informed by dodecaphonic harmonies. This demanding fifteen-minute work was composed in 2015-16 and recorded for the first time on Nimbus Records by the Kopelman Quartet.

Composer: Johannes Brahms
Editor: Kathrin Kirsch
“Harmony, bliss, music of Raphaelesque beauty! and yet in its simplicity, how wonderfully artistically everything is done.” This is how Theodor Billroth enthused about the first String Quartet op. 88 by his friend Johannes Brahms. No wonder that it soon won the hearts of audiences and musicians alike. This chamber music work was written in spring 1882 as usual put to the test in various preview performances and revised until the autumn. Here, Brahms placed himself fully in the tradition of the Mozart quintets, also choosing the same scoring with two violins, two violas and a cello. With an edition of the performing parts and a matching study score based on the text of the Brahms Complete Edition, G. Henle Verlag is now the first to publish an Urtext edition of this jewel of the quintet repertoire.

String Parts
Composer: Johannes Brahms
Editor: Kathrin Kirsch
As with its companion work op. 88 from 1882, Brahmss second string quintet was supposed to be completed in the relaxed atmosphere of a summer in Bad Ischl, but eight years later. The works first technical try-out in Vienna in October 1890, which Brahms described to his friend Clara Schumann as “not displeasing”, was followed by a fine-tuning of the work in close dialogue with musical friends such as Joseph Joachim before Brahms sent score and parts to his publisher Simrock at the year's end. With its at times orchestral texture and stirring, typically Brahmsian rhythms, this cheerful work early on won the hearts of listeners and players alike, despite presenting the latter with some challenges. This new Henle Urtext edition is based on the New Brahms Complete Edition, for which editor Kathrin Kirsch has consulted all the autograph sources and first editions. With parts that have judiciously set page turns and cue-notes to facilitate performance, it offers the best foundation for approaching this jewel of Brahms's chamber music.

STRINGS
Composer: Johannes Brahms
Editor: Katrin Eich
Brahms's First String Sextet became very popular after its publication in 1861, yet his publisher Simrock still hesitated when the composer offered him a second such work in 1865, "in the same cheerful mood". So Brahms made overtures to other publishers, but thenSimrock finally agreed to take it on. The critics were initially rather sceptical towards this Sextet op. 36, but Brahms's friends thoroughly approved of it. Clara Schumann praised its accomplished motivic work, while others enthused about its magical sound colours. This practical edition by Katrin Eich, based on the Brahms Complete Edition, now offers performers the opportunity to form their own opinion, whether in performance or by perusing our study edition. The parts include player-friendly cue notes and have excellent page-turns.
