    Series: Henle Music Folios

    Format: Softcover
    Composer: Joseph Haydn
    Editor: Georg Feder

This last of the surviving C major sonatas was written during Haydn's second London sojourn in 1794/95 for the pianist Terese Jansen, Mrs Bartolozzi. It seems to have been a very personal expression of admiration for Jansen-Bartolozzi, for Haydn (who was best man at her wedding in 1795!) had the London first edition of the sonata appear with the inscription “Composed expressly for and Dedicated to Mrs Bartolozzi.” He also granted her the ownership of the sonata. The pianist may have been unaware that a slightly different version of the second movement had already been published by Artaria in Vienna in 1794...

This revised and single Henle Urtext edition uses skilfully set-up ossia staves to allow both versions to be performed, and is also provided with new fingering by Christian Zacharias. The accompanying texts reflect the latest research from the Haydn Complete Edition.

    Features:

    Series: Henle Music Folios

    Composer: Franz Schubert
    Editor: Dominik Rahmer

The B major Sonata numbers among Schubert's early piano sonatas. Composed in August 1817, it was not published until long after his death. The unusual key (for its time) shows the young Schubert's delight in musical experimentation; in the same year he composed other sonatas in D-flat major, A-flat major and f-sharp minor. Typically Schubertian are the surprising modulations, and the abrupt changes of mood between lyrical passages and dramatic outbursts.

As the autograph score is lost, our edition is based on autograph sketches and on copies from the composer's circle. The preface, by Schubert expert Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl, and the detailed comments section, provide detailed information about the work's genesis, and on the sources and readings. Fingering by pianist Martin Helmchen is a further highlight.

Piano Sonata in B minor - Study Score
    Features:

Following the revision of Henle's facsimile of the Piano Sonata in B minor (51483227) in 2015, they now present the corresponding new Urtext edition. With the help of the splendid facsimile reproduction they were able to analyze several passages in the autograph more reliably; in addition the editor Ernst Herttrich not only consulted the first edition but also a copy of a student of Liszt's, in which the composer had made entries in his own hand. Clara Schumann reacted with a lack of understanding when Liszt commented: "It is only blind noise - not a single healthy thought, everything confused." Today we view this differently. Henle's new edition of this key piano work is further enhanced by the sophisticated fingerings supplied by the piano titan Marc-André Hamelin.

As a highly virtuoso composition, the B-flat major Sonata no. 11 did not appear within a group with other sonatas, but rather held its own as Opus 22 under the title 'Grand Sonata'. Beethoven offered it to his publisher Hoffmeister in December 1800 as “a large solo sonata” and shortly afterwards warned explicitly once again: “this sonata is very taxing”. Among the earlier sonatas, the B-flat major Sonata is chronologically the first for which a manuscript was also available for the edition. Admittedly, not from Beethoven, but at least a copyist's manuscript that he reviewed, and on the basis of which the reliability of the original edition can be checked - an editorially important factor which one unfortunately has to do without in the sonatas with lower opus numbers. Responsible for this new edition are again the editors Norbert Gertsch and Murray Perahia. The fingerings were provided by Murray Perahia himself.

Bookended by two famous sonatas, the Waldstein op. 53 and the Appassionata op. 57, the F-major Sonata op. 54 has always lived in the shadows, regrettably. In this first large-scale two-movement sonata, Beethoven experiments with striking character contrasts in the first movement and a virtuosic perpetuum mobile duet in the second. In both interpretation and mastery of technical difficulties, this sonata therefore poses a considerable challenge for pianists and might have been avoided for this reason as well. The sonata shares the fate of many early works by Beethoven in one respect: no autograph exists. Murray Perahia and Norbert Gertsch have thus only been able to examine an original edition as a source for their new edition. As always with the new editions of Beethoven sonatas from Henle, Maestro Perahia also provides the fingerings - and his own commentary on the meaning of this sonata.

    Composer: Sergei Prokofiev
    Editor: Claudia Heine

Prokofiev's Piano Sonatas 6 - 8 are often referred to as “war sonatas”, since they were composed in Russia during World War II during times of great hardship. As the shortest of the three, no. 7 is entirely focused on the essentials, and is certainly Prokofiev's most famous piano sonata. Anyone who has heard it will not forget the hasty first movement, marked “Allegro inquieto”, the cantabile theme of the second movement and the relentless pull of the machine-like, thudding finale. The Sonata appeared in print in 1943 and that same year received the Stalin Prize (second category), including prize-money of 50,000 rubles, which was welcomed with great joy in the Prokofiev household. You can also derive joy from Prokofiev's Seventh Sonata, here critically edited on the basis of all the sources, and produced using Henle's legendary music engraving. A preface by the world's most prominent Prokofiev researcher, Simon Morrison, rounds off the edition.

Beethoven's three Piano sonatas op. 2 were the first works in this genre to which he gave an opus number, thus signalling to the music world the special importance that he assigned to them. He wrote them during his first years in Vienna and, along with his op. 1 piano trios, they helped to establish his reputation as one of the most significant composers of his time. These three sonatas - all of them small masterpieces - are arranged in ascending order of difficulty and virtuosity. At the heart of this A-major Sonata is the well-known, profound Largo appassionato movement, whose staccato bass line is reminiscent of double bass pizzicati. It stands in stark contrast to the nimble Rondo-Finale, whose theme returns each time with ever more elaborate arabesques. Murray Perahia's fingerings have been tried and tested over several decades of performing these works, and offer a new approach to these milestones of the piano repertoire.

When Günter Henle founded his Urtext publishing company in 1948 he began his catalog with a two-volume edition (51480001 and 51480002) of Mozart's 18 piano sonatas. These sonatas remain part of the core repertory of every pianist. In the intervening decades both volumes have been revised several times in order to keep pace with the current state of research. The latest update, concerning K. 331, the “Alla turca” Sonata from volume 2, dates from 2015. The editor's preface and critical report provide detailed information on all the sources and textual issues. 51480001 and 51480002 include fingerings; Henle now present both volumes without fingerings, for pianists who want to find their own way into Mozart's piano universe.

As with all of his mature chamber music works Ravel also emerges as an innovator of traditional forms and techniques in his piano trio, composed in 1914. Thus the “Passacaglia” movement corresponds to the underlying form of the Baroque Period. The music on the other hand was, according to Ravel, “like that of Saint-Saëns,” which was surely meant ironically. For the historicizing template only served as a framework for experiments with musical idiom: from a constant oscillation between major and minor to combinations and overlaying of the most diverse metres. The fingering for our edition of this technically extremely demanding work was provided by the renowned French pianist Pascal Rogé.

    Piano Trio
    Composer: Gabriel Fauré
    Editor: Fabian Kolb

The idea for this, the penultimate work in Fauré's oeuvre, came in 1922 from his publisher Jacques Durand, who had published Ravel'sfamous Piano Trio just a few years earlier. Fauré initially did not get beyond sketching the work, and for a while he considered using a clarinet as an alternative to the violin. Only when he went to spend the summer in Annecy-le-Vieux in Savoy did Fauré succeed in writing the Andantino, the unusually extensive, elegiac middle movement of this Trio. The outer movements then followed in Paris the next winter. This late work by Fauré is notable for its clear lines and forms and for its balance between the piano andthe string instruments. This Urtext edition is a significant addition to the French chamber music in the Urtext catalogue of G. Henle Publishers.
