Without a doubt, Dvorák's melodious cello concerto numbers among the most popular of its kind. It is hard to imagine that the Musical Times harboured little hope that it would remain in the repertoire after the London premiere! Written in the winter of 1894/95 while the composer was still in America, the work underwent several revisions, particularly in the solo part, in the spring and summer of 1895 following Dvorák's return to Bohemia. His cellist friend Hanus Wihan provided expert support, even making his own entries in Dvorák's autograph manuscript.

The vast number of small and larger revisions ultimately led to some confusion during print setting, resulting in Simrock's 1896 first edition of the score, piano reduction, and solo parts displaying numerous inconsistencies. These were carefully examined for this Henle Urtext edition while referring back to the autograph sources and an early copy of the solo part. Thus, not only the substantiated Urtext solo part, but also the piano reduction prepared by Johannes Umbreit now offer an optimal working basis for all musicians.

In contrast to the first cello sonata (HN 1357) composed four years earlier, this substantially more catchy and playful second sonata enjoyed great success with audiences and critics right from the start. Friend and associate Vincent d'Indy wrote to Fauré the day after the premiere in May 1922: “I would like to tell you how much I am still charmed by your so beautiful sonata. In it I found what is seemingly forgotten these days: music.” It therefore comes as no surprise that the sonata rapidly found its way into the concert repertoire, where it maintains an uncontested position to this today. Like Elgar's Salut d’amour, the two “chansons” are amongst his most popular melodies. The dreamy “Chanson de nuit” and its cheerful counterpart “Chanson de matin” are often performed together.

Composer and publisher already sensed that this “evergreen” would build on the success of Elgar’s Salut d’amour, and they similarly planned arrangements of this pair of works for various instruments. Not all of them came from Elgar’s own pen, although the cello arrangement probably does, for he himself wrote to the publisher “A cello arrangement should be useful: I have written it where necessary in the tenor clef: I understand that amateurs of small attainments prefer the treble clef”. He was thus consciously aiminghis arrangement at amateurs, something that should not prevent advanced and professional cellists from revelling in these charming melodies in Henle's Urtext edition.
